LEARN · REGIME DETECTION
How Do Macro Regime Shifts Affect Asset Allocation Decisions?
Regime shifts require portfolio repositioning because different asset classes have structurally different risk-return profiles in different regimes. A portfolio optimized for Goldilocks will underperform in Stagflation. Regime-aware allocation adjusts composition when a shift is detected, repositioning toward structurally favored asset classes — but the transition window (3–9 months) requires reduced conviction and increased diversification across regime scenarios.

The Repositioning Challenge
The most difficult aspect of regime-shift-driven allocation is the transition window — the 3–9 months during which the old regime is ending and the new regime is not yet confirmed. During this window, the old regime's favored assets begin underperforming before the new regime's favored assets begin outperforming. Acting too early incurs costs from the old regime's continuation; acting too late misses the new regime's early gains.
AhaSignals addresses this by outputting a probability distribution across regimes rather than a binary regime call. During transitions, the portfolio should reflect the probability-weighted blend of regime allocations, gradually shifting as the new regime confirms.
